As long as they're not too far from home, they'll eventually find another flowering shrub, lay their eggs and produce a new batch of "Mexican Jumping Beans".Magic bean toys for kids, pretty and versatile to play with. It's not exactly "jumping", but imagine seeing little brown seed capsules bopping around on the ground all by themselves! No wonder Mexican kids collect and sell them in the local street markets.Īfter a few weeks of thrashing around, the larvae spin a cocoon, undergo metamorphosis and emerge as adult jumping bean moths. They sometimes even scoot a millimetre or two in one direction. Now the larvae have the strange habit of rolling around vigorously inside the capsule causing it to rock back and forth. The capsules are dark brown and about the size of a piece of uncooked popcorn. The flower capsules gradually harden with the larvae trapped inside and eventually fall to the desert floor. ![]() There, they start eating the growing seeds. ![]() The eggs hatch and the larvae eat their way further into the developing flower. The adult moth lays its eggs in the developing flower of the shrubs which grow in rugged parts of Mexico and Baja California. The larvae grow inside the seed capsules (not beans) of a Mexican desert shrub called Sebastiana Pavoniana. It's the larvae of the jumping bean moth ( Laspeyresia saltitans) that cause Mexican Jumping Beans to "jump". They're very real, although they're not really beans and they just roll around a bit rather than actually "jump". Because the marble is much heavier, the foil flips over and the marble can take off again. When you put it on a slope, the marble rolls down the tube until it collides with the sealed end. It looks weird because you can't see what's going on inside. Your "Mexican Jumping Bean" moves a bit like the real ones from Mexico. The marble rolls inside the foil causing it to flip and scoot about. Hold the box at an angle and it will move around in a very odd way. After a bit of banging around, your bean should look like this. Note - the bottom of the box needs to have square edges.Ĥ. The marble will do some panel beating on the foil every time it hits the walls. Put the bean in a square lunch box and shake side to side. The marble should be able to roll from one end of the tube to the other.ģ. The 'bean' will look something like this - a bit rough but that's okay for now. Pop the marble inside the tube and carefully squash both ends to seal it. If you’re using foil from an Easter Egg, make it nice and smooth first.Ģ. Note: normal aluminium foil works fine but for a more colourful critter, use your Easter Egg foil. The tube should be just a little bit wider than your marble. Roll it around your finger (or a thick pen) to make a 7cm long tube. ![]() Cut a rectangular piece of aluminium foil about 7 by 12 cm. Use a marble and your Easter egg wrappers to make Mexican Jumping Beans that’ll scare your mates.ġ. "Aaaargh! What is it? Get it away from me!!!". ![]()
